Academy Note:

Mr. Henderson is a member of the Advisory Board of this Academy. VTI is the ONLY Academy approved vendor for vestibular testing equipment. And for those of you who bought expensive VNG equipment from a distributor and then discovered that you could not consistently identify enough balance patients to get adequate utilization of that VNG equipment, think about this --- on average about 50% of all older patients screened with CAPS™ Professional or CAPS™ Lite will fail the screening with a score that requires further evaluation. And once evaluated by a physician, as many as 80-85% will usually be candidates for therapy, and as many as about 30-35% will be candidates for ENG/VNG.

Vestibular testing IS a valid and valuable market but like other diagnostic testing, it must be properly performed, documented and billed.

International Medical Electronics -  Magnatherm Shortwave Diathermy

Short wave diathermy (SWD) and ultrasound are both deep heating modalities, however there is considerable difference in their effectiveness and ease of use.  Modern pulsed SWD such as the Magnatherm, manufactured by International Medical Electronics, Inc. have independent induction therapy heads.  Magnatherm has a further advantage of two treatment heads, so that two areas can be treated simultaneously, one area can be treated from two directions or one area can be treated directly and remotely at the same time. 

Ultrasound units have one treatment head and can only effectively treat an area twice the size of the treatment head.  SWD can heat an area 25 to 50 times larger.  Also, diathermy can heat more deeply than ultrasound and to a higher level than ultrasound and the heat decays more slowly, thus providing beneficial effects for longer periods of time.  Ultrasound requires a coupling medium that must be applied to the patients skin be for treatment is initiated and this must be cleaned off the patient after the treatment.  Ultrasound cannot be used on the spinal column or other bony prominences. 

While the initial cost of SWD is greater than that of ultrasound, the cost for using ultrasound is much greater.  SWD is a supervised modality, which means that the operator can be performing other duties, as long as the operator is within earshot of the patient receiving diathermy treatment.  Ultrasound is a constant attendance modality.  The operator is required to be in continual one-on-one contact with the patient. 

Newer ultrasound units are billed to be hands free. but they still have the same disadvantage s mentioned above compared to shortwave diathermy relative to therapeutic deep heating.

Furthermore, if Medicare is being billed, they still require direct one-on one attendance by the operator, which does not save any time.  Thus, in the clinic or physicians office ultrasound has been found to be less effective than SWD and more expensive to use.
